YOUNG, Henry (1873-1923)

Henry Young (Pegasus 1923).

Henry Young (Pegasus 1923).

For six years between about 1916 and January 1923 Henry Young coached the rowing VIIIs at the School. His untimely death was keenly felt by many former Collegians. He had taken over the coaching from W H Pincott.

It is uncertain however, whether he was a student at the College as there is no enrolment record for him.

Henry 'Tracker' Young was one of the most skilful tap-ruckman to play football for the Geelong Football Club. His career began in the Victorian Football Association in 1893 during which he played 47 matches in the period 1893-1896 and a further 167 games with the VFL and 7 interstate games over 19 seasons. He captained Geelong for nine successive seasons as well as Victoria in 1908. He was the recipient of the Best and Fairest Award of the Geelong Football Club in 1905 and 1906, and was inducted into the GFC Hall of Fame, the GFC Hall of Fame Legends and selected for the GFC Team of the Century.

A Henry Young appears in several football photographs of the 1890s and a 'H J Young' is listed as a member of the 1st Football XVIII for three years from 1895-1897 and in the 1st Cricket XI in 1896 and 1897. This may also be Harold James Young (1879-1950) wo was enrolled at the College on 24 April 1892.

Henry Young died on 10 January 1923. In 1923, the Henry Young Memorial Cup was instituted to be competed for by the Senior Fours at each School regatta. It was eventually to become the cup awarded to the winning crew in Inter-House rowing and continued to be awarded up until about 1975.
