YOUNG, Dr John Wilkie (1889-1980)


John Wilkie Young known at various times as ‘Wilkie’ or ‘Jock’ was educated at Horsham State School, Geelong College and Ormond College, University of Melbourne, where he graduated MBBS in 1913. He was Resident Surgeon at the Children's Hospital in Melbourne from 1913 until 1915.

During World War I, he enlisted in the Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC) in August 1916 and embarked on 1 August 1916 on HMAT A67 Orsova. He served as Medical Officer to the 3rd Divisional Engineers in France from November 1916 until March 1918, when he was invalided to England. He returned to Australia and was discharged from the AIF on 5 September 1918.

He was enrolled at Geelong College in 1893. The enrolment record provides no exact day of entry or any date of departure. He is listed in a number of Annual Report Prize Lists from 1903 to 1906 suggesting that his final year at the College was 1906.

His sporting prowess extended to membership of the 1st Football XVIII of 1905 and 1906, the 1st Cricket XI of 1906 and the 1st Rowing VIII of 1905 and 1906.

John Young was born at Horsham on 16 January 1889, the son of Thomas and Catherine nee Jenkins. He died at Fitzroy, Melbourne on 9 November 1980. His brothers, Robert James Young (1877-1939) and Frank Stuart Young (1892-1959) were also student at Geelong College.

A biographical entry in Early Pioneer Families of Victoria and Riverina described him: 'John Wilkie (Young) born Horsham, Vic, 17th Jan 1889. Educated Horsham State School, Geelong College and Ormond College, Melb University; graduated MB BS, 1913. Resident Surgeon Children's Hospital, Melb 1913-1915. On active service during Great War, 1915-18; served in France as MO to 3rd Divisional Engineers AIF, 1916-18. General practice in Caulfield, Melb since January 1919. Married Catherine Sheila Mackenzie, daughter of Richard Piper, mining engineer and draughstman Broken Hill Pty Co and his wife Jeannie (nee Mackenzie), and descendant of John McLellan, who took up Tullich Run, near Casterton, in 1846, and Cape Wrath Station, near Hamilton. Has issue: 1.Michael John Wilkie born Caulfield, Melb 27 Aug 1927. 2. Catherine Marjorie. 3. Penelope Ann.'
