SUTHERLAND, Alexander Charles (1869-1941) Alexander Charles Sutherland was born at Geelong on 25 December 1869, the son of Kenneth Sutherland and Georgina nee Stuart. He was a day student at Geelong College enrolling on 13 February 1883, and leaving there in 1885, in which year he was Dux of the school. His address at entry was Upper Skene St, Geelong.
The
Geelong Advertiser later reported his success at University in March 1890:
'From a notice published at the University yesterday we learn that Alexander Charles Sutherland, eldest son of the town clerk, Newtown, and an old pupil of the Geelong College, has taken honors at the final examination in engineering, and has been awarded the Stawell scholarship for engineering.' He was awarded Master of Civil Engineering in 1896.
He went to South Africa, where he gained distinction as an engineer, and served in the Anglo-South African War. He subsequently lived in South Africa for many years. On the 19 January 1902 at Cape Town he married Margaret Mabel Goddard, eldest daughter of A D Goddard of Aberdeen St, Herne Hill, Geelong.
His brothers, Kenneth John Sutherland (1873-1945),
George Stuart Sutherland (1878-1932), and Arthur Benjamin Sutherland (1880-1962), were also educated at Geelong College.
He died at Cape Town, South Africa on 15 April 1941.
