STONE, Ernest Joseph (1878-1938)


Ernest Joseph Stone was born in Ballarat on 29 March 1878, the son of Joseph Stone and Ann nee Golding. He entered Geelong College on 17 September 1891 with an address Elizabeth St, Newtown.

He served (No. 96) in the Anglo-South African War in the 4th Imperial Contingent. In 1909 at Ballarat, he married Mary Ann 'Daisy' Butler, daughter of Harry and Elizabeth Butler, and they had one child, Ernest Lindsay Maxwell Stone, born at Richond on 18 June 1910.

During World War I, he served (No. 2490) as Lance Sergeant Stone in the 10th Company Australian Army Service Corps. Enlisting on 1st October 1914, he embarked for Egypt on HMAT A26 Armadale on 20 October 1914. He returned to Australia, embarking on 29 January 1916.

His son, Ernest Lindsay M Stone, served with the RAAF as Flight Lieutenant during the Second World War.
