REEVES, Vera Margaret (-1978)

REEVES, Vera Margaret (-1978)

Generally known as Miss Reeves, Vera Margaret Reeves was appointed as the School’s Bursar in June 1918, a position she held almost continuously for 22 years until 1941. She is one of the longest serving persons in the position of bursar or, as the position later became known, that of Business Manager.

Her office during this time was the small room on the east side of the original Main entrance at the Senior School campus. Gradually, her position had evolved over the years to that of ‘Manageress’ with responsibility for the entire business and domestic operation of the School. Pegasus, on her resignation commented that she was ‘Merciless to bungling and quietly determined to have things done correctly, she was always merciful to the bungler’.

Miss Reeves left to go overseas in January 1936 and Pegasus reported her return in December: Miss Reeves will again be in charge of the office after her year's travel, which included research work in school management, and a course of study in dietetics at the London University. '

In 1941, she accepted a position at Armidale School, NSW.

Pegasus in 1956 noted: ' Miss V M Reeves, former bursar and manageress has been rediscovered at the Hermitage by several Old Collegians taking daughters there. '

Vera Reeves died on 1 April 1978.
