IPSEN, Carl Frederich Hendrich (1892-1956)
Carl Ipsen, staff member, was the son of the Danish born, Carl Hendrik Ipsen and Bessie J nee Westmore of Avoca, Victoria.
After the outbreak of World War I, Carl Ipsen, age 24, school teacher of 1037 Punt Rd, Melbourne, enlisted on 16 February, 1916 and served as a gunner with 3 Division Ammunition Column during World War I. He was discharged 1 July, 1919 and at that time was listed with the 8th F A Brigade. He joined the College in 1931 to become Senior English and Latin Master from 1931 to 1955 and Housemaster of Senior House for most of that time. Among his other duties was the supervision of the library, where his work was commemorated by a labelled set of shelves.
During the 1930s he, together with ‘Tam’ Henderson, led the Debating Society and in the mid 1930s assisted with the foundation of the Glee Club. He always referred to students by their complete first names and was known by his nickname ‘Kord’ after the character in the cartoon strip 'Mandrake the Magician'.
