GARBUTT, John (1846-1910)

GARBUTT, John (1846-1910)

John Garbutt was a staff member of about 1868 and became Headmaster of Ballarat College.

He was the son of John Garbutt and Amelia nee Williams. John undertook his Matriculation exams in December 1861 as a student of Geelong College. He joined the staff of Scotch College from 1870-76, playing in Scotch College's 1st XI from 1870-72 and in its 1st XVIII from 1870-71, as it was then permissible for teachers to play in school teams.

He was principal of Ballarat College from 1877-1907. The marriage notice in the Geelong Advertiser of 25 January 1872 states that his wife, Mary Kiley, nee Harrison, was the second daughter of James Harrison, early owner of the Geelong Advertiser newspaper.
