Professor Geoffrey Donnan

Professor Geoffrey Donnan is Director of the Florey Neuroscience Institute (FNI). Professor Geoffrey Donnan was previously Director of the National Stroke Research Institute and Professor of Neurology, University of Melbourne, Austin Hospital campus.

He co-founded the Australian Stroke Trials Network (ASTN) which has numerous investigator driven and commercially sponsored stroke trials. Subsequently he also co-founded Neuroscience Trials Australia to enhance Australian commercial and investigator-driven clinical trial capability. His research interest is clinical stroke management.

He is Past President of the Stroke Society of Australasia and Past President of the Australian Association of Neurologists. He has published over 300 peer reviewed journal publications, 51 book chapters, edited 15 proceedings of national meetings, edited/authored three books, and has participated on the editorial boards of seven international journals including Lancet Neurology, Section Editor for Stroke and Associate Editor of Cerebrovascular Diseases. His research interests include neuroimaging and clinical stroke trials including acute studies

He received the American Stroke Association's William Feinberg Award for Excellence in Clinical Stroke Research in 2007. This award is rarely made outside the United States and Professor Donnan is the first Australian to gain this prestigious award. In 2008, he was awarded the Bethlehem Griffiths Research Foundation Medal for outstanding contributions to research in stroke.

Geoffrey Donnan first attended Wangaratta High School before his enrolment at the Geelong College as a member of Calvert House from 1963 to 1966. His brother, Stephen Donnan was also a student at the College. Geoffrey was a member of the Debating, Football, and Library Committees earning House Colours in Athletics, Cricket, Football and Swimming. In 1966, he played in the 2nd Tennis Team and, from 1965 to 1966, was a member of the 1st Football XVIII. In 1965, he was a Calvert House Prefect, Pegasus Editor and in 1966, School Captain. He was awarded the T S Hawkes Memorial Prize in 1965 and the Principal's Prize for the School Captains in 1966. In 1966, he stage managed the School drama production 'JB' - a joint production with Morongo.

Geoffrey Donnan graduated from the University of Melbourne and trained in Neurology at the Austin Hospital followed by post-doctoral positions at the Mayo Clinic and Massachusetts General Hospital from 1980 to 1983.

In the Queen's Birthday Honours announced on the 10 June 2012 Professor Geoff Donnan, Director of the Florey Neuroscience Institutes, was made a recipient of the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO). The award was given for 'distinguished service to neurology as a clinician and academic leader, and through international contributions to research, particularly in the prevention and treatment of stroke' .

Geoffrey Donnan was inducted into the Old Geelong Collegians' Association Notables Gallery at Geelong College in 2011.
