Staff member and Mathematics teacher, Alistair Deans, who died after a brief illness in May 2009, was a student at Geelong College from 1956, matriculating in his final year, 1961. He had previously attended North Geelong State School. In 1961, he was one of the student editors of Pegasus Magazine. After leaving College he gained a Trained Teachers’ Certificate from Melbourne State College in 1965 beginning his teaching career with the Victorian Department of Education at Golden Square High School, Bendigo in 1966. From 1967 to 1970 he taught at Norlane High School. At the University of Melbourne he studied Mathematics and Physics graduating Bachelor of Science in 1970.

In 1971, Alistair commenced a long period at Matthew Flinders Girls' Secondary College before a brief retirement from there in 1994, when he followed an interest in travel by training as a travel agent and working as a travel instructor with Bill Healy Travel School. Colleague David Hibbard, writing of Alistair’s retirement as a part-time Mathematics teacher from Geelong College commented that 'Permanent travel positions were hard to find and we were pleased that he decided to apply for a teaching position at his old school in 1996 when the popular and long-serving Bruce McLeod retired. Alistair guided many students in Mathematics and Science during his ten years here. His students found him calm, caring, compassionate, and good-humoured.' Alistair was employed in a variety of part-time mathematics positions at both Senior and Preparatory School Campuses during his employment at the College from June 1996 until September 2006.
