CALVERT, Andrew Chirnside (1882-1957)Andrew Chirnside Calvert was born at Irrewarra Station, Colac on 8 November 1882, the son of John Calvert and Margaret Fair nee Chirnside, of Irrewarra. He was Educated at Geelong Grammar School from 4 August 1898 to December 1898 before enrolment as a boarder at Geelong College from 5 April 1899. At College he played in the 1st Football Teams of 1900 and 1901. In 1900 he was awarded 2nd prize in Arithmetic in the Fourth Class.
He worked on the land before his enlistment (No 22020) during World War I as a Sapper in the AIF on 10 September 1917. He embarked on
HMAT A34 Persic on 21 March 1918, and arrived in England on 24 May. He served in the 1st Division Signalling Company, attached to Field Company Engineers in France. He returned to Australia on 4 July 1919 on
HMT Norman.
He died in 1957.
His brothers, Percy Norman Calvert (1886-1926),
Alan Murray Calvert (1884-1927) and possibly, Noel Leonard Calvert (1877-1900), also attended College.
Noel Leonard Calvert (1877-1900) was educated at Geelong Grammar School and is alleged to have briefly attended Geelong College in 1892 though there is no enrolment record relating to him. He was commissioned Lieutenant in the 6th Dragoon Guards in 1899, and served in the Anglo-South African War, where he was killed in action on 19 October 1900 near Bethel in the Transvaal.
