BAXTER, Dr James Moorhead (1873-1958)

Pegasus published a very brief obituary of James Baxter in 1958: 'Dr Baxter died in Melbourne on February 14. He became a member of the Association (OGCA) Committee in 1911, a Vice-President in 1912 and 1913 and President in 1914 and 1915'.

James Baxter was enrolled at Geelong College in 1893. His enrolment address was 'Green Bank', Wahring, Victoria. He had been born at Nagambie on 26 December 1873 to parents, William Baxter and Martha nee Moorhead. He died on 14 February 1958. The Enrolment Register lists his date of birth as 2 January 1875 however there is a penciled note in the Register as follows: 'Letter 25/1/55 from J. M. Baxter to A. Austin Gray states he was born on 26 Dec 1873 (this date being obtained from Registrar of Births & Deaths Melb.)'

Between 1909 and 1928 an annual prize known as the Dr Baxter Prize was awarded. This prize was funded and presented by Dr J M Baxter. In 1909, Pegasus announced: 'A handsome prize of the value of five guineas has been presented to the School by Dr. J. M. Baxter, and it is the generous intention of the donor to make the award annually. His desire is to encourage the senior boys to exert a manly influence'.

His brother, David Baxter (1866-1948), was also a boarder at Geelong College.
